Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

28 Nov 2021An interesting and varied walk, and one of contrasts - from tranquil canalside towpaths, to fine hilltop views surprisingly close to Halifax, to a 2-mile long, straight stretch of road through suburbs which passes the former Duke of Wellington's barracks and ends, or begins, with a gruesome, full-size replica guillotine (aka a 'gibbet' in these parts)!
There are a couple of places where care is needed to keep on the Slow Ways route:
i. Grid ref. 033255 - Travelling W to E, at bridge No.7 over the Rochdale canal.
Step over the low wall at the end of the overflow weir (where the couple are walking in photo 3. below) before you get to the bridge, and follow the wall to you left to get up onto the bridge. Once there, a large metal gate is chained up, and is not easy to climb over. The local landowner(s) here appear to be trying to deter folk from crossing the bridge at this point. No footpath signs exists to point you in the right direction to/from the A646.
ii. Grid ref. 045255 - A small detour may be necessary to walk round Shepherd House.
N.B. The first can be avoided (along with the not particularly pleasant and tricky route that takes you through a housing estate) by continuing along the canal for a further 0.5km, to cross both canal and the A646 at Luddendenfoot, and then walking up Luddenden Lane to rejoin the route at its junction with Kershaw Drive.
