04 Feb 2022Hardly any gradient to this walk but the beginning (Leaving Headcorn) along the Smarden Road is to encounter a very fast stretch of road which some may feel intimidated by. That said, once down "Love Lane" which runs alongside Smarden Road you are no longer on a fast section of road.
There is a section after going under the railway bridge which is the first time the route heads onto field paths, at approximately 3.3km from the start, which is very very poorly maintained (see picture with big red arrow). There is an alternative to taking this short section of footpath but it means one would have to walk on the road for a bit longer. Alternative shown in red in photo.
Aside from those two sections, which are both within the first 3.5 km from Headcorn, the path is very easy with a nice mix of road and cross country. I like this route as an outing to Ashford so I will walk this again.
This is a good days walk with some lovely scenic places (such as Smarden pictured) where public transport is frequent from Ashford back to the start at Headcorn.
