Description
I have walked HayUck One, roughly, in the past. It heads out towards the east through a few housing estates. But starting from the centre there's always going to be a mile and a half through houses, so here's an alternate version for those, like me, who want to start from the south side of Haywards Heath. I walked half of it last week, and it seems OK. This is my description of the first half. There is a pavement all the way down the B4122 (Fox Hill) to the pub (Fox and Hounds), so it's quite safe to walk that far. Unfortunately, there isn't a footpath along Hurstwood Lane; and it has become a bit of rat run recently with new houses being built at the northern end. So, despite it being officially a 30, you have to watch out for a few hundred yards until turning right down Colwell Lane. But after that, it is really a pleasant walk. The right turn off Colwell is quite obvious - see first photo. Although that path is very wide at first, there is a section in the middle where it crosses a stream where it gets a bit tight and muddy, so it's not ideal for people with wheels. Turn left up Slugwash Lane; there is a furniture maker just before you need to turn right. See photo. The actual right turn doesn't have a finger post, but a sign at ground level for those in buggies. See photo. Pleasant stroll across country to Paul's Lane. At this point you need to go straight across. Unless you want to stop for a break; if so, turn left for about 100 yards or so to a pleasant picnic spot. See photo. Once you get moving again, retrace your steps, and follow the signs to get onto Ham Lane and the Sussex Borders Path,. See Photo. Follow Ham Lane up to Scaynes Hill and basically re-join HayUck One

11 Jul 2021 (edited 02 Mar 2022)I walked the route from Newick to Haywards Heath on 11th July to compare with HAYUCK One which I walked two days earlier. The two routes are the same from Newick to Uckfield so this will encounter the same overgrown footpath on the outskirts of Uckfield.
Overall, I think HAYUCK One is the better route. It is more direct and sticks to quieter lanes around Newick.
The Ham Lane section from Scaynes Hill on this route offers a great view of the Downs. When I got to Slugwash Lane and headed south I took the first footpath on the right after the furniture makers and headed past Abbots Leigh rather than going all the way down to the Fox and Hounds at the bottom of Fox Hill, then heading back into HH.
