Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

31 Mar 2023I set out with the intention of walking HayHel4 from Hayle to Helston but due to a route diversion due to river bank erosion I had to take the route shown in this slow way. Apart from this diversion, the walk along the river Hayle is great. Flat and enjoyable for the most part. Heading south-east out of Relubbus, boots were definitely required. The right of way was very wet and much like a shallow river in places.
Following that, all the minor roads were quiet and felt safe to walk on. The footpaths were generally easy to navigate. The last section through the woodland east of Newham house is a bit of a free for all in terms of paths. But as long as you are generally following the river downstream you will pop out on the edge of Helston.
Helston and Hayle are great hubs with transport links, accommodation and shops etc. One small issue with this route is the settlements passed through en route don't have much to offer. It's a relatively rural part of Cornwall and without biggish diversions and added distance you won't find anywhere with much to offer. Saying that St. Erth does have some facilities should you need anything after leaving or before approaching Hayle.
Overall a very enjoyable slow way even on a very wet day. I hope the eroded bank can be rectified soon, and then HayHel4 will be the optimum route to follow.
