Description

Like Harwel 1, but follows the suggested Ayot Green Way, with lovely views over the Lea Valley, and not muddy. Some minor route accuracy issues solved too, as I've added it after walking

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

26 Mar 2023 Spring

I walked this on a showery Saturday morning, from Welwyn to Harpenden. There had been showers, and there was a hail shower once I approached Harpenden. There was little mud on the whole route.

After a short walk through Welwyn's shopping area (photo #1) and along a slightly busy road, the route takes you to Sherrardspark Wood, which was minimally muddy (photo #2). After crossing Digswell Hill (not too busy) and going over the A1, this route goes join the Ayor Greenway via a footpath just north of Ayot Green (100mtr of narrow lane walking). You go then up a few steps and up on the lovely Ayot Greenway, a former railway bed. It is well maintained and no mud to be seen, and it has lovely views of the Lea Valley (photo #3-6). Just east of Wheathampstead it makes a minorly muddy detour to go underneath the B653 (photo #7), before continuing to the lovely village of Wheathampstead (photo #8), with refreshments galore. After leaving through the church yard and up a residential streets you soon find yourself going through fields, with well behaved paths, and again more great views of the Lea Valley. The path is sort of on top of a ridge, making it unlikely to get muddy too (photo #9-10). It then descends to the path along the river for a bit, where it gets a tiny bit muddy (photo #11), but not overly so, and remember, there were rain showers just a little time ago. The route then goes up (photo #12) a little to first cross, and then join Station Road that you follow to the station (photo #13).

Great route, and I bet that in later spring and summer, there would also be virtually no muddy sections.
