25 Aug 2023A very pleasant route using a number of trails. One section required a choice of adjacent path to avoid a infrequently used path.
Cows and horses in some of the fields.

10 Sep 2022Very easy walk to follow, very pleasant.
There are some stiles on the way between fields so it is not accessible for wheelchair users, also the path through the fields is not paved so could be muddy if it’s been raining. We walked on a semi dry day and it was fine. There is one field just north of Bogs lane/HG motors, where the path disappears, but if you walk straight along the tree line it’s fine - see photo below.

27 Aug 2021The route follows the old railway line then crosses farmland and joins the Beryl Burton Cycleway into Knaresborough. It is a pleasant walk that is fairly easy to find but is one that is seldom walked. The following points are worth mentioning:
1. The path from the railway line starts just after the wood ends and is marked by a waymark crossing a concrete footbridge (see photo). It is easily missed unless you are looking for it
2. The path keeps the wood on the right-hand side and cropped field on the left (see photo). About half way between the concrete bridge and the used Harrogate to York railway line, the official public right of way turns left and passes into the enormous cropped field (see photo). This right of way, which passes straight through the middle of the huge cropped field, is almost never used and everyone seems to walk round the field boundary instead (as on the gpx route)
3. On the opposite side of the field, and after crossing the disused branch railway to Starbeck (now also a footpath/cycleway) your route passes behind Longlands Farm, with the new Longlands Common on the left
4. The path is pretty much a straight line from Longlands Farm to Bilton Hall Drive passing through or along the edge of several fields that usually contain horses then cows. There is an awkward stile for dogs on this section (dogs are probably not a good idea anyway unless walking the path in winter when the cows are not present)
5. The route turns left on Bilton Hall Drive to join the Beryl Burton Cycleway. This last part of the route has already been reviewed (see HARKNA6).

26 Dec 2022It’s a shame that the right of way across the large ploughed field between Bilton towards Longlands is not used. The farmer ploughs it up every year without restoring the footpaths (2) across the field. I have complained to the North Yorkshire footpaths officer, without any action…
