Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

21 Jun 2021Great route following the former railway, now the River Tyne Trail and National Cycle Route 68. Quite difficult to pick up the start in Haltwhistle but once you cross the bypass around the town it is well signed. Steady, easy gradient up the first part which is all tarmac.
The only disappointment is the route around the Lambley viaduct where the trail suddenly stops and a diversion is in place down some steep steps to the river and then back up again. If you are cycling (as I was) then the safest route (and route 68) is to backtrack across the viaduct to the road and go around to the village of Lambley.
The trail from Slaggyford to Alston runs alongside the track of the South Tynedale Steam Railway. There is a good cafe at the Station in Alston for refreshments.
If you are cycling there are lots of gates to open and close as you move along the various sections between fields.
