07 Jun 2026Safe and thoroughly easy to follow with the best bit being in the middle. I started from Halesowen and the pavement is the main surface encountered. Leaving Halesowen (and West Midlands, you are entering Worcestershire) there's the chore of a golf course to cross. It was quite quiet on the damp Saturday morning I traversed it but you are crossing fairways, so there's attention to pay. Having left the golfers and passed through a field of amazingly calm cows with now, quite mature calves, the route starts to climb and the chance to look back is rewarded by some interesting views back to Halesowen. Getting over the brow of the hill was where the best part of the walk starts. Suddenly the views are of the towns of the Black Country and the hills of Worcestershire and Shropshire (and Wales?). Joining the Monarchs Way takes you most of the way into Hagley via the Obelisk on Wychbury Hill. "Who put Bella in the Witch Elm?" graffiti refers to a murder victim found locally during the Second World War. There's brief walk along the main road but there's a well maintained footpath takes you most of the way into Hagley. The route goes down Worcester Lane before turning right towards the meeting point at the station. If you're not in a rush for your train home (trains go to Worcester, Birmingham and Stratford and all points between) I'd recommend going straight on to Worcester Road where you can find the King Arthur, a Batham's Pub. As already mentioned there are trains from Hagley and a well connected bus station in Halesowen (buses to Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Stourbridge). Steps and stiles on this route.
