Description
A route that is reasonably direct, leaving Guildford across the high land of Pewley Down (with good views) before gradually descending and skirting to the north of St Martha’s Hill (a diversion up to the church and its views is possible). It passes through the attractive village of Shere (for food, drink, buses and toilets) before arriving in Gomshall. Apart from the initial ascent within Guildford there are no steep hills. Surfaces should be good for reasonably fit walkers, with much on sandy paths, but not for wheels. There are some stiles to the west of Shere. If starting from Guildford find the clock above the cobbled High Street, and walk through the large arch opposite to ascend Pewley Hill

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

25 Sep 2023This route is very good and having a great walking and a kind of trekking experience. Apart from the first up ascent of the pewley hill, the rest of the part will pretty much decent to walk in the daytimes. Out of the whole part of walk you will bearly see a road or a community of house. This walk gives immense way to taking you to the nature rather than the daily polluted fast running world. This route is passing by the farms small lake river tillingboune and through the st Martha hill and a several churches. You will be walking all through the hills but as of my experience this is very good in the daytime as I will be recommending night times with extreme caution as there wont be any lights or etc. There were police always going though this path made you comfortable. As through walking this path you will see many tanks filled with water for the dogs or the animals, which was very good. Also I recommend to take certain amount of water as you won’t find any store or etc to have water throughout the walk. I would recommend to do this walk. This route doesn’t show in google maps I would recommend to use os maps or slow ways maps . It’s reasonably pretty much accurate and you doesn’t feel yo were lost in the path there were some gates were locked and you will be having alternative gates. I would surely doing this route again in future.

20 Aug 2023 (edited 17 Feb 2024)I agree, a lovely walk. I stopped for lunch at Shere having walked from Horsley through Gomshall. Generally a good surface path although sandy in places. One stile at near Albury and a few kissing gates out of Shere. I didn't go up St. Martha's (having done it before) but continued through Chantry Wood to the River Wey instead of going up and down Pewley Hill (see photo map). Good views of the North Downs.

16 Apr 2023I walked this from Gomshall to Guildford on a sunny Saturday afternoon. It had rained quite a lot in the past week, and during the preceding night.
It was a delightful walk. Although it had recently rained, most of the paths where easy going, along fields (photo #2) and through woods. There were often great view of the North Downs (photo #1, #5, #7). Shere is a delightful village (photo #4) and has snacks, tea, and whatever else you'd like on a lovely day out. There were even some newborn lambs! (photo #3) West of Shere, the route follows the Pilgrim's Way (photo #6, #8, #9) for a fair amount of its length. I was quite pleased it did not go up Martha's Hill, although the view from there is lovely. Getting into Guildford is along the Mile Path which is a fairly long ascent (photo #10, #11), but again, has great view from the top (photo #12). And then it finishes in Guildford's High Street (photo #13) and crosses the River Wey (photo #14) to reach the finish at the station.
I would definitely recommend this!.

22 Jul 2022This part is quite a large ascent up Pewley hill but otherwise it's a fair easy walk, the path near Albury can get very narrow and overgrown. Terrain was mostly gravel tracks which made for easy walking. There is a good viewpoint on the Albury landfill site which we stopped at to have a bit of a break.
Shere is a lovely place to stop for some lunch and ice cream with a small stream running through it.
If you don't feel like walking back you can either get the bus from Shere (if it turns up!) or train from Gomshall.

14 Mar 2022I loved this walk from Gomshall to Guildford. It's a really stunning route through the Surrey Hills AONB, with a good variety of fields, trail climbs, and woodland. You climb a bit to Guildford, but you are rewarded with a fantastic view of the Surrey Hills before the descent into Guildford central, quite long and steep. In Guildford there are plenty of restaurants, shops, toilets, and market stalls to explore and enjoy. When I did this in March 2022, there were a few trees blocking the path, which might be removed soon, but around that date, please note that these might be obstacles. There are also a couple of gates to pass through, which would mean the whole route isn't accessible.
