Berkshire Walker

01 Sep 2024 (edited 03 Sep 2024) Summer

A beautiful car free route through the Surrey Hills, mostly on well signed woodland paths, following the River Wey, then the North Downs Way, before a steep descent into Gomshall.

Amazing views at St Martha's Hill (with the historc pilgrim's way church on its summit) and Newlands Corner. Cafe and restaurant at Newlands Corner car park, close to the location of Agatha Christie's mysterious disappearance in 1926.

This route connects with stations at Guildford and Gomshall. All the usual town centre amenities in Guildford. Gomshall has several pubs and shops.

Despite having no gates or stiles, the steep sandy paths, and several flights of steps means this can be a challenging route, not suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs etc. Dry under foot in summer, but probably has very muddy and slippery sections in winter.

The Millbrook footbridge over a weir near Guildford town centre is closed so requires a short diversion onto the adjacent Shalford Road pavement between High Street and the Weyside pub. Apparently the bridge collapsed in 2019, diversion maps on National Trust website: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/surrey/river-wey-and-godalming-navigations-and-dapdune-wharf/millbrook-footbridge-and-tumbling-bay-weir.

11 Nov 2023 Autumn

Really enjoyable route. ‘Rolling terrain until Newlands Corner. A little care needed crossing the A25, and then back into a pleasant woodland stroll until the Alpine descent to Gomshall (or Silent Pool if you duck out a little early). The walk up to St Martha’s is moderate but the reward of the views to the south is worth it.

Downsize

29 Apr 2021 Spring

This is an attractive route on major paths, with excellent views over Surrey and West Sussex
from St Martha’s Hill and Newlands Corner. Surfaces should be fine for walkers when dry, though the parts on the North Downs can become muddy in winter and very wet periods. The descent from the North Downs Way down to Gomshall is steep and can be slippery in wet weather.
