Walked August Saturday afternoon Grimston to Fakenham direction. This route started off really positively - the first third was on farm tracks and field footpaths (edge of fields and between hedges). Once it started to getting towards villages though there was a lot of road walking and tarmac. That was mostly ok as even in peak summer the roads were mostly very quiet and were the sort that grass was growing (or soon would be) in the middle. This made for easy walking and for the most part it could be cycled too. There were a couple of short stretches that might be harder with a bike. It was mostly very easy to follow too. There were no gates or stiles or otherwise. There were some fallen trees to navigate around but it was easy with just walk into a field a bit. There were a couple of places that I would tweak this route. 1. West Rudham. The plotted route goes to the left of the village green and to the left of the Crown pub. I would just keep right on the green as this cuts a very short section of slightly busier road off. 2. On the approach to Fakenham before Hempton - the plotted route takes a short stretch of the very busy A1065 (see photo with double lines on road in middle) which has no pavement and more limited verge. I would keep straight on and take lamb lane and then turn left. It still ends up on the A1065 but the stretch has a pavement. The bit just before this was also a little busier but the verge was fine to walk on. There was a little bit of overgrown path but not more than 10-20m. The countryside was varied - fields and small copses. Undulating hills. Few buildings outside the villages. There were pubs at about 8-9km in and about 14-15km in. I enjoyed the walk but I gave it a lower score due to the volume of road walking. They were quiet but I find it harder to relax when worried about the possibility of cars coming. Saw some lovely wildlife - deer, hares, red kites, lizards...and I've never seen so many partridges in my life. Many many groups along the way and over a dozen in each.. biggest group we saw was probably 40+! There were no access issues and yes it was safe although note the suggestion on the A1065.
