03 Aug 2023I cycled this route in the rain but it is a perfect surface for wet weather as tarmac does not get muddy. Enjoyable, even in the rain - and if it isn't wet there are plenty of picnic tables around and a few eating establishments to break up the route if required.

30 Jul 2023I cycled this route on a wet miserable summer day, and really enjoyed it! I went from Torrington to Barnstaple so had the wind behind me most of the way (good tip if you're cycling). The route starts in the middle of Torrington and uses a main road to get to The Tarka Trail. As I was cycling I opted to stay on the road, but there is a path all the way as well.
The Tarka Trail is a former railway that is now a shared cycle/footpath. It is tarmac all the way and almost flat, so is an easy ride. From Torrington to Bideford it runs along the River Torridge and is mostly wooded, so quite sheltered, although you can hear the noise from the busy A386. There are several bridges to cross with nice views. From Instow the route runs alongside the River Taw and this stretch is much more open. I appreciated having the wind behind me.
There are various info boards along the route, explaining the industrial and ancient history of the route, and also the nature on the route.
There are plenty of benches and places to stop and take a break, as well as cafes and pubs for refreshments.
As it was a wet day, I only came across a few other wet adventurers, but the Trail gets quite busy in nice weather, and is also used by commuters during the week.
Lovely way to spend a couple of hours.
