Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

This route is safe and functional and easy to navigate. It has noisy traffic and very little to enjoy so I wouldn't walk it again but there are limited options and your priorities might be different, so I'm not going to add a flag to this review.

Following the cycle path from Tilbury Town Station to the roundabout by Asda and McDonalds feels counterintuitive as you head towards the heavier traffic road, but it does mean that I had light controlled crossings for all the busy roads. The cycle path heading north along the A1089 is, at least, set back about 1m and has a wide strip of green to one side. Hoping to see some wildlife in the reeds and scrub along the ditch on my left was futile but it took my mind off the constant traffic and HGVs on my right. Eventually it turned off onto Dock Road, less traffic and few HGVs here but still busy. It was a relief to turn off onto the smaller residential streets via some alleys, at little down at heel. Brief view down Sheffield Street towards the river. Intriguing ampitheater in South Essex College.

There's a level crossing at Grays Station, so no need to use the footbridge but there is a small flight of steps between Seabrooke Rise and Sheffield Street, which is hidden from view as you approach, it feels as it it will be a dead end. Grays Bus Station is just beyond the train station.

There is a path beside a river which you can turn off onto about halfway along the grim A1089. I tested this too and the green respite was a big improvement. Perhaps this route didn't use it because it doesn't appear on Ordnance Survey maps. I did some doubling back and tested it, will upload an alternative route soon.
