18 Nov 2023A fantastic route, entirely following the Dales Way along the River Wharfe.
Walked from Grassington to Ilkley, the walk offers plenty of places to stop/refresh. The paths are good, and unaffected by flooding even after v heavy rains. There is one small on road stretch. The countryside is picturesque from start to finish, with a huge amount of nature to be seen.
On a summer's day, you could easily eat a different meal in each settlement. Given it was November, the light ran out between Addingham and Ilkley having set off around 11, but even so the paths were easy to follow by headlamp.

27 May 2022We walked this route as part of the dales way, so broke the journey at Burnsall. It would be a long day without this!
It’s a lovely walk alongside the river, with only limited ascent (but some slippery paths) around Bolton Abbey, and lots of lovely bridges to look at.
Toilets and a cafe available in Bolton Abbey grounds.

13 May 2022Slightly torn on the review and whether to award 4 or 5 stars. The whole route from leaving Ilkley follows the route of the Dales Way and is therefore well signposted and clear to follow. The first half of the walk as far as Bolton Abbey is enjoyable, however has a reasonable amount of road walking or remains on footpaths close to busy roads which spoils the enjoyment somewhat. There is one slightly tricky 100m stretch of direct road walking with no pavements and an obscured bend followed by a road crossing, just prior to Bolton Abbey which requires some care and attention.
The stretch from Bolton Abbey on to Grassington however is absolutely stunning and in my opinion is some of the finest walking country in the UK. Walking almost entirely alongside the River Wharfe as it climbs through a mixture of pasture and woodland, it is truly idyllic and you are surrounded by stunning wildlife.
