09 May 2023I walked this route, as part of following the Thames path from Reading to Goring in May 2023. After quite a bit of rain there are sections close to Goring that are a muddy and quite slippery so good grip is important. The section just out of Pangorne towards Goring that are particularly lovely.

15 Aug 2021This is a wonderfully picturesque route following the Thames path from Goring to Reading (although we walked it in reverse). There's a lovely variety in the countryside with a lovely wooded section (that is quite narrow). I also agree that Pangbourne makes an ideal place to stop for lunch!.

11 Aug 2021Goring to Reading (Gorrea 2) review.
A attractive Slow Way which follows a section of the Thames Path National Trail.
The route starts in Goring and heads south along the towpath as the river cuts through the Chilterns (The Goring Gap).
The towpath switches banks at a former ferry point, forcing the Thames Path away from the river on the approach into Whitchurch. The walk has a steep section here (Photo 1).
There are amenities in Whitchurch, and across the bridge in Pangbourne. The towpath continues on the south bank (Photo 2).
Unfortunately, the river bank after Mapledurham Lock is inaccessible, requiring some street walking (Photo 3). The route takes a footbridge over the railway to rejoin the Thames Path.
The walk into Reading stays by the river and is narrow in places (Photo 4).

15 Aug 2021I’d like to offer an alternative route between Whitchurch and Reading; perhaps instead of the road walking provided by Gorrea One. It’s actually a walk I make quite often and find it has more variety than Gorrea Two’s Thames Path.
Leave Whitchurch by the Hardwick Road (SU636774). The Whitchurch brick labyrinth is on the right (SU640775). The road passes an alpaca farm, stud farm, and the Hardwick Estate. A footpath continues the route east to arrive at Mapledurham. This small village is famous as a film location and well worth a visit on an open day (see www.mapledurham.co.uk).
Leave Mapledurham by the bridleway towards Park Farm (SU671769), and basically follow it all the way into Caversham (via The Warren). You emerge near the attractive Caversham Court Gardens (SU710748) and take the Caversham Bridge south into Reading.
Hopefully I’ll be able to add this as an alternative route; in the meantime it’s here as an informal option. (Martin Ellis)

11 Jun 2021An excellent scenic journey.
Most of the route follows public footpaths along the river Thames.
The terrain is mostly uneven, with a couple of steep inclines between Whitchurch-on-Thames and Goring.
For those wanting to stop for a break midway, Pangbourne village has a variety of small shops, cafes and pubs.

10 Jul 2023We're trying to encourage the public to walk a particular route (in parts) to commemorate Victorian nature writer Richard Jefferies' 175th birthday, and your review of this Slow Way falls perfectly into it. Would we be able to use your photos and review on our social media, please? All contributions are fully credited, of course.
