Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

07 Jul 2024Lovely countryside / views, however very difficult to find the paths in the heather, good carpark in Goathland with toilet, nowhere to stop en-route until you get to Whitby. Not suitable for buggies / wheelchairs, or anyone concerned about deviating from the route. Think we walked an additional 2 miles.

08 May 2024This was really a walk of two halves....... the first half would definitely struggle to score a one with the path very difficult to find from Goathland across the moor even when armed with a digital map! The route was not easily mapped to paths and as a result had to cross wet and boggy moorland - heading towards a point on the horizon. It would be worthwhile re-mapping this section, as the second half of the route was much more enjoyable and scenic. There were still a couple of times where it was difficult to navigate but without the consequence of the boggy moors.
Facilities at Goathland included free toilets, a car park (with dodgy wifi) and nearby local shops.
Accessibility wise - this walk is only suitable for keen walkers (not for bikes, pushchairs or those less able to walk) with lots of mud, several bouts of stepping stones, stairs and dodgy stiles.

21 Apr 2024There is a car park in Goathland which is easy to find, and has clean and tidy toilets. The start is easy to find. When we went the route crossing the railway line was blocked but a short detour was possible to get to the other side of the railway. This was easy to find.
This route is not flat , there are multiple uphill and downhill sections. Not all are easy to navigate and if the weather has been wet , some are quite hazardous and slippy.
It was muddy at various points and the route involved styles (some of which are not well maintained), stepping stones across a small river and narrow footbridges. This route is not suitable for pushchairs or anyone with mobility issues.
Once on the moor the path was not easy to find and as a result we lost the footpath and ended up walking across the moor - which is not advisable. (But we did manage to get back to the official route) even though this cut a corner off and did mean we walked along the main road for a few hundred yards.
Also add that you need to cross the railway line once approaching Ruswarp, you need to do this twice so please ensure you use the crossing point control to be advised if it ok to cross and no train is approaching.
