Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

It looks like we are the first to review this route and in some cases maybe the first people to walk along some of the sections. Some of the suggested paths and bridleways are not clearly marked / signed and not obvious on the ground requiring the use of a GPS at times to know where you are and a compass would have been helpful. The is a significant amount of road walking, they are only B roads but some are quite busy. Some roads have grazed verges that can be walked on, but other are more challenging. When walking from Goathland to Robin Hood's Bay the first issue was finding the path across Goathland Moor, eventually we just headed on a general bearing to intercept the road. At Leas Head Farm the paths have been changed requiring a deviation from the planned route, see image below. After leaving Newton Farm, the path to New May Beck was very overgrown in places and the final section to the road was heavily poached by cattle. The path selected on Sneaton Low Moor was not the best as it added more road walking along the very fast and overgrown B1416. An alternative is available. The path across Graystone Hills was impossible to follow and required some GPS based navigation to find the junction of the A171 and Brow Top. Brow Top was another fast road with overgrown verges. The final route into Robin Hood's Bay is quite complex and could be simplified and also remove considerable ascent and decent, see suggested change in image below. Overall, this journey was quite hard work given the landscape only contains small areas of open country. Some work is required on the signage and a little path clearance. I would suggest the route is redrawn.
