A walk of two halves really. I elected to do this walk as opposed to Glyhir1 and Glyhir3 as it avoided the former open cast site just to the south of the main road leaving Hirwaun. On my earlier walk from Aberdare to Hirwaun (Hirabe1), although the reclamation of the site looks to be fairly advanced, there was still a lot of lorries on the site, so I decided on the road walk.
Leaving Hirwaun, the crossing of the A465 Heads Of The Valleys road is a bit of an adventure in itself and care is needed. The path then follows the A4061, which was not that busy, but a fair bit of the traffic was heavy lorries, so this part of the walk was not great. However, on leaving the main road, the rest of the walk was a 5-star event, through the village of Rhigos and then on a well signed-posted, mainly through farmland. Just past the gliding club, one of the signs appeared to indicate straight on, following the farm track, which looks to be wrong, but I followed the farm track and ended up after a bramble scramble a little higher up the main road than the planned route, so I can`t vouch for the last leg of the path down into Pont Walby.
