Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I walked this route (most of it) 4/4/23. There are a few problems with the route overall but one major one which I'll explain first. I was walking from Gillingham to Queensborough. Near the end of the walk I crossed the road bridge onto Sheppey and went down onto the marsh across what seems to be a grassy field but is in fact very wet under foot. The map shows a crossing over Joan Fleet but when I reached that point there was nothing to be seen. The water level in the Fleet is much higher than shown on the map on this website. The water is at least 10 metres across. I tried to work my way around but there was no route without trespassing on the railway. I walked back to Swale Station and travelled home from there. Later I looked on Google Earth. The crossing is clearly visible and I could see that I'd got to the correct place. It must either have been washed away or submerged.
Other potential difficulties.
Walking through Gillingham there are two flights of steps on the path down to the Strand. These can be avoided by a detour of 2-300 metres round the main road. There are also steps up where the field path meets Old Ferry Road at Swale.
There are quite a few places where the walk follows roads with no pavements. These include Lower Rainham Road and Horsham Lane between the Orchard View estate and Upchurch. Here the road curves, reducing visibility, and there was quite a lot of fast moving traffic.

The same problem applies to most of the Queenborough routes heading south. I tried QueSit 1, from Q, it was still impassable at the end of April although the first reviewer was able to paddle it barefoot in June 2021. I added QueSit 2 which is drier, although instead it has some road without pavements. But the long section beside Sheppey Way is on pavement and most of it is actually next to a smaller parallel road, not quite as bad as it looks on a map.

The English Coast Path is coming to Sheppey 'soon' and once it's actually finished should be a big improvement.

Good news. The coast path between Kingsferry Bridge and Rushenden is open! I've tested it and a footpath route that avoids the 2 busy road sections you mentioned.
