Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

We walked this route from Mere to Gillingham in October, taking 2 hours at a relaxed pace with a few brief stops. The walk is completely off road, flat and with no stiles, and is mostly well marked. The views are lovely (even more so in the other direction!), and the path is mainly on marked footpaths through meadows, with some woodland - very pastoral. Conditions were good underfoot, but best walked in the summer, because in the winter months the fields in the Blackmore Vale tend to get waterlogged and very muddy. I am so grateful to have found a pleasant walking route between the two towns, which I had not found previously, and am looking forward to sharing it with other locals.

We walked this route in reverse, from Mere to Gillingham. It is a lovely walk, and fairly easy to follow with help from the downloaded gpx. One short section was very lumpy and muddy underfoot despite lack of recent rain, but it may be possible to skirt that - I need to try it again and check. One area passing through trees had a few brambles to avoid - we could have avoided that by going into the field but there were cows and an electric fence so we decided against it. We met another walker who told us that the narrow field we were in was an old drove. He was the only other walker we saw en route, until we reached the outskirts of Gillingham. I don't imagine this is the most direct off road route to Gillingham, but it is probably be the most attractive. It wouldn't be accessible for cyclists or people with mobility issues.
