09 Aug 2024A gentle stroll along the dead level (except a set of steps) Leeds-Liverpool canal towpath, travelled in days of yore by commercial barges on a similar Lancashire - Yorkshire route to us. Just sufficient interest along the main length and then it entered Skipton through the older part of town - by the back door.

07 Aug 2024This route follows the Liverpool Leeds canal all the way to Skipton.
The busy A65 can be heard for quite sometime coming out of Gargrave.
The noise recedes towards the middle of the walk.
Route finding is of course easy.
It's a great place to take your time and observe the wildlife including birds and butterflies.
Not a spectacular walk, but a nice easy route into Skipton.

26 Jul 2024Very easy route finding. Just follow the canal on an easy, well maintained, stone tow path. Lovely meadow verges with butterflies and a range of birds on the canal and in the accompanying fields including mute swans, lapwings, starlings, house martins, swallows, swifts, oystercatchers, reed bunting and buzzards. Also saw a banded demoiselle when enjoying a rest on 'Roy's bench' 3 km from Skipton. A lovely entry into Skipton showing the busy canal area – a part of Skipton I had not seen before.
The noise from the A65 did spoil the walk slightly at times but there were long stretches when you were away from it.
This route seems suitable and used by cyclists and possibly just wide enough for pushchairs although there were stone steps at the beginning of the walk. (See Mary's earlier review for more access details).

23 Jul 2024A perfectly fine if unexciting walk along the Leeds Liverpool Canal to Skipton. Obviously route finding is no problem once the canal is located in Gargrave and the tow path condition is excellent throughout. The tranquility of the walk is interrupted by significant traffic noise from the A65 making this walk rather a chore than a pleasure although the canal basin at Skipton provides much interest for the walkers. Many pubs and cafés in Skipton as well as a bus and train station.

05 Nov 2023This easy to follow route along the Leeds-Liverpool canal towpath, is largely level and in good condition underfoot in most places. It can also be walked one-way as there are bus and train connections between Gargrave and Skipton. I would echo comments of other reviewers about the traffic noise.

16 Dec 2022This route is mostly canal towpath, with a good surface. There are a few gates, kissing gates, and a short flight of stairs. I noted that the 2 swing bridges I passed lead up to the A65. There are bus stops in each direction at the junctions with the A65.
I took pictures but the ones found in Mary Oz's review were better so I suggest you check those out. I wasn't bothered much by traffic noise, possibly due to the wind direction that day.
This was a very pleasant walk.

29 Apr 2022This route is almost entirely canal towpath, with a good surface of compacted gravel. There is a short bit of paved road and alleyway at the Gargrave end, and a footbridge with steps over the canal at the Skipton end. There are a few gates (one with a stile alternative) and kissing gates to negotiate, and a flight of stairs past one of the locks. It is generally a very easy route to navigate and walk though. I saw a variety of wildlife – curlews, oyster catchers, lapwings, mallards, swans; and canal interest – locks and swing bridges, mileposts and half-mileposts. The towns at either end are well supplied with cafés, pubs, and toilets. I would say this is the perfect route between these two lovely towns, except that the sound of traffic on the busy A65 is usually nearby (at least it means there is an easy bus route between the two ends!). And - the lock gates have some interesting writing engraved on them too!.
