20 Mar 2022This route is a mixture of mostly little-used farm field paths and quiet country roads. There are a lot of stiles (sometimes a bit rickety) and narrow bridges, and some lack of signposting, but it is a very pleasant rural route, with good views across expansive farmland, and quiet enough for curlew and hares. I imagine some of the fields could be quite muddy in wet weather.
I started in Longridge, in the opposite direction to Burnroyd. Between Tenter Hill and Horns Reservoir, I could see the multiple electric fences he described in his review and survey, and was much happier with this path. I was pretty relieved to avoid the nasty stile into a ditch and electric fence in one of his pictures. The paths on the ground, where they exist, are sometimes slightly different from those shown on the OS map, and I have shown the current actual route on this Slow Way.
Inglewhite was a convenient and pretty place to stop midway, although the pub is not open every lunchtime. There were benches on the green though. Several of the fields north of Inglewhite had recently been muck-spread right to the edge, so I hope that the footpath will not be obscured by crops. Generally, the fields seemed to be used for sheep, and possibly cows.
The little wooded valley between Scotch Green and Walmsley Bridge was very pretty and the bluebell leaves had started to appear. There was a fairly long section of road through Claughton and Cross, but it was pleasing and interesting. Apart from the short section of B road at the north it was very quiet, and the B road was not too bad. Good bridges took the route over the motorway, over a river, and under the railway, until the canal was reached. After the canal, pleasant housing and shopping streets led into Garstang.
