Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Review of Slow way Galnew three (Galston to Newmilns 3).
I walked this route in reverse (i.e. from Newmilns to Galston) on a rainy morning in July 2025. I had been following Galnew one but found no way past Barr Mill at NS51023681. This version follows a slightly different route to enter Galston. The route begins in the centre of Newmilns but quickly begins to leave the town via the commercial district around Greenholm (where there is a wealth of historic, industrial architecture to enjoy). Eventually the town buildings are left behind and the route follows Stratholm Terrace through farmland. Cars also use this very narrow road so some care is required. At Greenways Kennels and Cattery, the route is diverted along a boardwalk (with a few boards missing or loose) and onto a good, metalled track through woodland. Barrmill comes into view ahead and here the route follows a very obvious, fenced footpath to the right (which is unmetalled but nevertheless flat and easy to walk on). This footpath leads to a running track and then along a narrow lane to Castleview Avenue. It is then a simple task to follow the residential streets into the centre of Galston and the end of the route. This is a simple, short and interesting route which could be negotiated easily by both walkers and cyclists.
