Description
The baseline FulPre route follows roads through North Preston. The suggested alternative route takes a slightly less direct route (5.75km compared to 5km) but goes through woodland and parkland and uses quieter urban roads. The route is generally paved, with a small section of gravel in Highgate wood. The revised route adds moderate gradient descents and climbs in Highgate wood and also between Lower Bank Road and Moor Park

01 Jul 2024I walked from Preston station and found it useful that the route also links to the bus station. I would recommend a minor diversion to take in Miller Arcade, perhaps the picture spoils the surprise. As we exit the city roads are quiet and have interest. The open green space across Moor Park makes the extra distance worthwhile. Tree lined Lower Bank Road has plenty of interest and a traffic speed of 20mph should make it extra safe for active travel. If a flood warning is in place it’s easy to continue to the A6 but normally the plotted route is good along tree lined roads or good paths. A good green alternative to avoid walking busy roads which at Fulwood is close to serve Royal Preston Hospital.

01 Jan 2024This route is a natural extension of 9156. Public transport links had been achieved previously so the walk commenced at The Black Bull pub at Black Bull Lane. The first 1.5km is uninspiring main road into Preston, but the walk surprisingly turns left at Pious X school through attractive woodland and bog land which will undoubtedly have wildlife. The path then proceeds across Watling Street Road into the old and most attractive housing in Preston. From there it winds down skirting the allotments, across Blackpool road onto Moor Park - the route that Oliver Cromwell marched his troops from the Ribble Valley. With Preston North End's Stadium on the left, the route goes down St Paul's Rd into Preston. Although this is mainly terraced housing, for the urban walker there are fascinating cultural facets to be found. Eventually the route goes into the town centre - the two outstanding pubs for historical value being the Market Tavern and the Black Horse. From there it is 2km to the railway station.

08 Sep 2021The route from Fulwood starts along the wide A6 then turns off to head through the pleasant Highgate Wood. This area can apparently flood when there is heavy rainfall. The path emerges into a pleasant suburban area, although a couple of sections of pavement were restricted by overgrown hedges. An off-road lane slopes down to cross a stream, then slopes back up to cross the road into Moor Park, which has some useful facilities. Visit Preston website says “Disabled toilets are available in the Moor Park bowling pavilion.” The route returns to housing streets and passes a very impressive mosque. Crossing the A59 pelican crossing leads you on to Preston Bus Station, a “Marmite” building that I like! The route back to Preston Station takes you past several historic municipal buildings.
I think this route would probably be accessible for good mobility scooters and buggies with the odd bit of judicious road crossing to avoid certain kerbs and overgrown hedges, but I have no personal experience to judge this.
