01 Sep 2022A mixed bag of a walk
The route from Frome centre to Oldford is paved lit, but on a pavement adjacent to a very busy road.....not the most pleasant experience. The field section to the Creamery varies from great to ok.
Around the Creamery is very problematic, it being very overgrown with brambles. ( I reported this ) This section is also alongside a brook, which I suspect in wet months is waterlogged
Take Secateurs!
Next is a short very hillocky section, thereafter a series of long grass fields with broken stiles ( I have reported these to Somerset CC ) Up to, and through Beckington is fine. Beckington has pubs, cafe, accomodation, bus stops and phones. Post Beckington to Southwick is a series of cropped fields, ploughed out fields, and a few locked field gates. Beyond Southwick the fields are fine, heavily used by dog walkers, and finally the paved lit section into Trowbridge lacks scenic merit.
Overall I recorded 23 stiles ( some broken ), 3 kissing gates, 5 field gates ( some locked )
NOTE Do not deviate off route to Rode which has a pub symbol on the OS maps, it has long bit the dust.
I recorded the route by GPS as 10.10 mi, and the download states 9.63 mi.
At a later date, I will compile an alternative route avoiding the Creamery, and consider the other field options.
