Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

This is the shorter town route, starting at Frinton-on-Sea Station and heading on paved footpaths along the wide treelined avenues ‘inside the gates’ of Frinton on Sea. Use a footpath or ‘ginnel’ to cut across past the flint-walled church and the Library to Connaught Avenue, the bustling High Street. Lots of small independent shops and cafes to look into as you approach the Greensward that runs along the cliff in front of the sea at the end of the High Street. We had lunch by the clocktower on the picturesque greensward, looking out across the sea, and then headed down the steps to the promenade heading left along the seafront towards Walton Pier. If the tide is in, you can walk along the level prom, or if the tide is out you can walk along the sandy beaches. The route is lined with colourful beach huts all the way to Walton Pier. From here head into Walton town centre via Newgate Street for tea and cake in The Nose bookshop or for a meal and a beer in The Victory pub next door. Trains take you back to Frinton from Walton on the Naze station every hour.

We walked the first part of this route from Frinton Station to the seafront, taking in intriguing houses and a fascinating church embedded with pebbles on the way. This is a quiet urban environment - leading to a vibrant street of shops. Generous dollops of ice cream helped us finish our journey scrumptiously at the greensward overlooking the sea - inviting us for a longer trip next time.

An afternoon walk through town at Frinton-on-Sea and heading down the seafront is my new Friday thing! I love having lunch at the blue Clock Tower or the Gardens for lunch, watching dog walkers and kite flyers against the backdrop of the sparkling sea. I wander the Greensward taking in the flowers or head down to the Prom to follow the coast and it's moods, until I am welcomed by the smell of donuts and ice cream at the pier of Walton-on-the-Naze.
