08 Aug 2023 (edited 15 Aug 2023) Summer

It was a very wet day when I walked this route. The Finchley Central underground exit through the barriers brought me to the wrong side of station to start with but it was quick to get round the road to the correct point. The first half of the route was through quiet, very nice large, often detached, suburban housing with lots of swanky cars but often poor quality paving. The footbridge over the A406 has slopes as well as steps but the slope down on the south side is a bit underused and overgrown but not too bad.
There was some grassland to cross on Hampstead Heath Extension which together with the woods in the main crossing of Hampstead Heath would make it very difficult for most wheels.
The main Hampstead Heath was lovely, the woods especially, despite the rain, but the extension merely quite nice.
I saw a jay, although the weather put most wildlife off, I reckon.
I think the rain affected my opinion of this route too, but in addition there was a lot of navigation needed, in the roads to the north as well as through the woods. This is not easy on a phone in the rain. Potentially lovely in the sun though!.

This is a lovely walk you could add a visit to the Tiny Forest Barnet, which is very just of the North circular.
Address Tiny Forest Barnet Henlys corner near Mutton Brook (https://what3words.com/went.give.torn).

I walked from Church end to Hampstead Heath, there were a few facilities including benches to sit and a lovely view of the pond however, there were rough surfaces such as loose gravel, unmade paths and deep muddy sections which you may have to look out for as well as a couple fallen trees and a flight of steps to climb.

I would thoroughly recommend the route to someone with the same requirements.

I really like this route a lot. I walked it from Hampstead Heath to Finchley Road on this day. There's a lot about it to commend.

Of course, the bits through Hampstead Heath are lovely. It's always so lovely in the park.

Bigwood Road and Big Wood itself are extremely lovely, as is Little Wood, its neighbour.

The Stephens House is a surprise bonus on the walk, and the rest of the residential streets leading to Finchley Central station are perfectly good for a Slow Ways route.

Be warned it can be a bit difficult to navigate through Hampstead Heath. The route I've uploaded here follows as accurately as possible what I walked when I followed footpaths through the park. Generally, it's okay if you don't end up on exactly the same footpath, so long as you're heading in the right direction. I tried my best to make the plotting as accurate, though, to help with navigation.

I really highly recommend this route. It's a great one!.
