20 Aug 2025I agree. This version of the Slow Way is as good as we are going to get until developers have finished building over the zone of rural edgelands at the eastern end of it and the area has transitioned into its suburban future. At the moment it is a little depressing watching the fields disappearing, even though I appreciate that we are short of housing.
But anyway, if you wish to walk from Filton to Hambrook at the moment, this route, though unexciting, is safe, reasonably direct and actually quite quiet from Bristol Parkway station onward. It is all along roads but has footways or broad cycle paths, and the footpath in the active zone of new building at the Hambrook end is protected by red and white safety barriers, although take care around the entrances to the building sites. The nicest bit for me was coming down the hill towards the Stoke Gifford bypass on Hambrook Lane, where you get a bit of a wider view ahead.
The route is undeniably well connected, though, with plenty of buses at the Filton end, and buses also from Hambrook to Yate or Bristol. It also passes
Bristol Parkway station which has local and mainline trains.

I had planned to walk Filham1, but the access is still blocked between the Stoke Gifford by-pass and the M32, due to the major new housing development, so I created this alternative route along Hambrook Lane. It may not be needed when the housing estate has been completed, depending upon the paths and access points they provide, but that seems a long way off at the moment. This route is also wheelable. At the moment, the part of Hambrook Lane alongside the new development is closed for traffic, but when it is opened up again, there are pavements all along the lane for safe walking.
