Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Walking through Fareham Town Centre and onto Wallington village was fairly easy and smooth pavements. Once over the motorway bridge and onto Boarhunt Road and Swivelton Lane, it became tricker, as there are no pavements only grass verges (over grown in July), making it difficult to walk on them. Walking on the edge of the road was hair to say the least - it's a very busy road and a 40 mph speed limit. Once past this, it was open farmland behind Fort Nelson before rejoining James Callaghan Drive before DSTL buildings. There is an option to use public footpaths behind DSTL and avoid walking on the busy road / grass verges (will try this next time). Just before Fort Southwick, there is a dedicated grassy path that then follows the road (on the south side), all the way along the hill until just before the George pub, where the the pavement begins again. Following the road until Bedhampton and through the outskirts of Havant to the station.

The route is reasonably accurate, although personally I would not do the first part of the walk again (Boarhunt Road etc. as it is an extremely busy road). I would start the walk from Portchester station instead, as it cuts out the no path section of busy roads and the majority of the walk would be on dedicated paths. I would not recommend this for pushchairs or wheelchairs, as the paths are uneven and narrow, especially during the summer months.

The views are spectacular on the walk, looking south, the Solent, Isle of Wight, Marchwood, Hayling Island and Portsea Island (Portsmouth). Looking north, the South Downs countryside and Butser Hill in the distance - well work the'safe' part of the walk across the top of the hill. (I've attached one photo, as haven't worked out how to make them smaller to be able to upload more.).
