Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

07 May 2022 Spring

This was a walk of two halves, and were I to do it again I would divert on to exesil 2 from Netherexe onwards, for more path and less road.

I went from Exeter to silverton and the route out of Exeter was lovely, with views over Duryard and Exe valleys. A small change I made by Higher Hoopern was to take the route in picture 2 which takes you past a nice community garden which you are able to walk around.

The paths out over Stoke Hill were drier today than I have ever seen them, but there is normally a need for some waterproof footwear. As the path meets the road by Stoke Post is the first small section of the road which feels a bit less safe - 30mph is not religiously adhered to. It is only a hundred metres or so, and then you take the path to Huxham. This looks on the map as if you start from the cross roads, but you need to follow the road for a few extra metres past the house Westings and then take the signposted path (see picture 4). This lovely holloway takes you down to Huxham and shows views of the route ahead (picture 5).
From there, the route is all on roads, almost all of which feel safe, being quiet and wide enough for easy passing. The only bit which wasn't much fun was the Thorverton road past the farm shop for a couple of hundred metres before reaching the Ruffwell Inn. 40mph and quite busy on a weekend. The road section of the walk is much less interesting and very flat except the very end, but is a good route. Refreshments are available in Stoke Canon and at the farm shop by Rudwqy Barton which has a cafe. Silverton has a shop and pub, no public loos.
