Eweban three

I walked this from Banstead to Ewell on a sunny afternoon. It had rained overnight, but this did not cause any problems on this route.

From Banstead village, it follows a few residential/council owned roads until Banstead station (photo #10, #9). The crossing at A217 is a little annoying, but not unsafe. And neither is the crossing of Fir Tee Road. Higher Drive was nearly deserted (photo #8), and a better option than following Banstead Road for longer (photo #7). Luckily, that was only a little section before going across the pleasant Priest Hill (photo #4, #5, #6) area and aside the playing fields. The only major minus point was having to cross the A24/Ewell By-Pass which required four badly timed pedestrian lights. After that into Ewell was good again (photo #1, #2, #3).

It was all down hill in this direction, but the opposite would have been more taxing.

After trying out Eweban one and having a good look at two’s alternative, I came back and tested out this route, which improves in a number of ways, using more quiet roads and paths, while keeping the central section the same.

Walked Banstead to Ewell.
Leave Banstead by a quiet path, cross dual carriageway at lights, and continue to Banstead station on a pleasant residential street and footpath through woods.

Shortly after the station the route turns onto a long residential road with large houses and huge front gardens, sadly these are mostly paved over.

Then the unavoidable main road section - a good path alongside and it isn’t very far before turning into the Priest Hill nature reserve. This is the highlight of the route. People were out blackberrying (not a good year, too dry), there were big skies, and being high up there was an unexpected long view west towards Heathrow.

From Priest Hill there is a long footpath direct to the Ewell bypass. After I crossed over to the Ewell side I noticed a footpath heading off into woods, and so I followed it into Ewell and decided this was a pleasanter approach than alongside the more direct, but traffic-y B road which feeds the bypass. So I reconfigured the Ewell end too!

Good paths and pavements throughout. No intermediate refreshments, but it’s not a long route and there are good options at each end. The nature reserve would make a pleasant picnic spot.

I caught a bus to Kingston from Ewell.
