Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

29 Jun 2024I started at Enfield station and my gps measured this a bit over 7 miles. I would walk it again.
The route along Southbury road, A110 is a busy road. It does have the advantage of different shops etc and places to stop if you want a break or refreshments. The junctions along here have pedestrian crossing, so you can get safely across the busy junctions.
When you get to the cross Meridian Way, A1055 there is an underpass under the roundabout that wouldn't be recommended for all after dark. There are steps but they can be bypassed down the bicycle track if needed - there are a few exits to choose from the underpass that could send you the wrong way.
Along Lee Valley Road by the reservoir the road is tree lined and on the south side the gap between some trees and the fence gets quite narrow (about 32") - there is more space on the north side.
Into Chingford the road gets noticeably steeper up to the King's Head pub then levels out and the A110 is left via a path down the side of the church heading towards Chingford train station.
At Queen Elizabeth's hunting Lodge, I went into the car park on the south side of the road and followed a footpath running essentially parallel to the road in a wooded area. It wasn't a well trodden path with some brambles etc sticking out - the route became unsuitable for wheelchairs here. Along the road itself is a better path, but it's not paved. I wasn't confident I had the correct path, but by travelling roughly in a forward direction I emerged by the Warren Wood pub.
Crossing Epping New Road, through a gap in the hedge and through a small woods, the route then goes round the edge of the cricket green.
After travelling up North End, the path goes down a cul-de-sac and becomes an alleyway that looks like it goes through someone’s front garden. There is a gate on this path that’s the type that blocks bicycles and wheelchairs.
I wasn’t sure if I was going the right way because there were a number of turns and the path was partially wooded – by heading ‘straight ish’ and not being tempted to take one of the turns the path opens out and across a field to a bridge over the train track with steps and gate.
The route travels along residential roads and joins an alleyway that goes to Loughton station – there are a few steps on an underpass under the railway.

16 Apr 2022I walked this from Loughton to Enfield. From Loughton to Chingford this was a nice enough route. However, from Chingford to Enfield it was dreadful. All along the same busy A110 road. It was really the worst of the slow ways that I have done so far. I'm suggesting an acceptable route as well.
