27 Apr 2022I didn’t enjoy this route very much. It is obviously not often used. A lot of it goes across fields full of crops planted over the footpaths, and you are drawn to walk along tractor wheel tracks which take you the wrong way. It is important, however, to stick fairly closely to the marked route, especially where there is a ditch or field boundary crossing, or you’ll find yourself blocked in.
It started fine from Elswick, although I was quite soon having to drag my feet through long grass. My first error was at OS Grid Ref: SD 42173 37371 just after Elswick Leys, where instinct took me the wrong way, due to electric fences and a well-worn track. I crossed the ditch and walked the full length of the field on the wrong side of the ditch, and was then forced to retrace my grass-dragging footsteps. It didn’t feel right to walk along the correct field inside the electric fence, but it WAS the correct route, and led to a footbridge into a sheep-grazed field with mercifully short grass! Another footbridge took me back into long grass again.
After a short road between North and South Greenhills, it back into the long grass. After another field I was once again misled by tractor wheel tracks. It feels wrong to push through the crops, but in this case, it was necessary in order to reach the kissing gate at OS Grid Ref: SD 42353 35038, next to Medlar Wood. I know this, because I was too kind to the farmer, and ended up blocked in again.
After crossing over the motorway, there was a long flight of steps down into more fields to negotiate. It finally got easier near Mowbreck Caravan Park. There was a ditch with a concrete footpath alongside it, then a path past cows up a small hill, then an inviting path down below the railway and into Kirkham.
On the plus side, I heard and saw curlew, skylark, hare and lapwing.
