Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

31 Aug 20251. The route shown would be better re-routed to go from Ellesmere town centre to the famous MERE that the town gets its name from. Then, walk along past the Boathouse Restaurant and take the footpath to the Shropshire Union Canal that runs adjacent to the Convent of St Clares. 2. At Bettisfield, the route should go from the canal bridge at Bettisfield, along the road to the old railway line, and then take the route up to Fenns Moss. From here it heads back to the canal and on to Whitchurch.

01 Jul 2025A fine, level walk most of which is along the towpath of the Llangollen canal (one short tunnel length). The section through the Fenns, Whixal, Bettisfield National Nature reserve is also of interest with a unique atmosphere. Note that care is required to ensure that the correct line between the old railway track across the field to the canal is taken (PROW is waymarked).
Both Ellesmere and Whitchurch towns are worthy of a visit.

11 May 2025Wow! What a Slow Way! A safe, direct, relaxing walk along the popular and very friendly Llangollen Canal. Where the canal bends, the walk takes a direct path along an old railway line into Fenn's, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses, a nature reserve rich in widlife. You rejoin the canal and then follow the very well signed paths into Whitchurch. Full marks.
