Porcovolente

22 Jan 2024 Winter

We walked this on a windy Sunday in January and it was fine, a little muddy in places but mostly very reasonable walking. Starting from Edgware until you are through Mill Hill it is a mix of small and large suburban roads. All the major roads have good crossing points.
The latter part of the route has stretches of wooded lanes and tracks with a few glimpses of rolling countryside. If you need a rest there are benches by Totteridge Pond which is a very pleasant place to sit. There are a couple more along Dollis Brook but that is about it for the route. Food and drink should be available at both ends of the route and the centre of Mill Hill is also well provided for with cafes and shops. At various points there are bus routes.

Walked from Edgeware to Whetstone - I'd recommend walking it this way too!

The first half is along the traffic dominated high streets of Edgeware and Mill Hill and although there are cafés they're not very enticing.

And then! Once you have crossed A41 and head up to Mill Hill and the gated communities things start to improve.

This route then delivers a beautiful finish through the woods (feels like Dick Turpin country) and then along the Dollis stream and valley into Whetstone itself. The start and finish are at the cute Northern Line tube stations.

16 Apr 2022 Spring

I walked this from Whetstone to Edgware on a warm and sunny spring day. It is quite up and down-y, with plenty of good views and greenery. It follows the Dollis Valley Green Walk for a while (just don't cross the first bridge when you're going south as the SW route indicates). It then goes up to the Ridge Way were a new housing development is being developed, before doing down again across the Mil Hill school grounds. From then on, the route is suburban street walking, and distinctly less interesting, but it'll get you there safely.

It's too bad that the old tube line from Mill Hill East to Edgware hasn't been turned into a full walking route.

A varied walk along suburban streets, wooded tracks, countryside and town. Some picturesque cottages with rugged farm tracks to NW London suburbia.
There's wildlife and diverse architecture along the way.
Lots of contrasts make for an interesting walk.
Not suitable for wheels.
