Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

16 Nov 2023 Autumn

November 2023. Direction: Abertillery to Ebbw Vale.

For most of the way this was a fantastic walk, easy to navigate, clear paths and stunning views from the mountain top section. There are no signs or waymarkers going up or coming down the mountain, but the paths were obvious until it came to getting down off the mountain and through the fields to the lane on the outskirts of Ebbw Vale. There was no path as such and the fields were very marshy in places. I followed the map the best I could, but it was a hard yomp on this stretch. I eventually found a discernible path just above and parallel to the stretch of water (old canal remnant ?), leading out on to the lane near the white cottage (formerly the Old Morning Star pub until 1984). Apart from this, it would have been a 5-star walk. There may be a better route by continuing along the ridge along Mynydd Carny Cefn, instead of taking the path to the left (west) of it. I may investigate this at some point. There were 5 or 6 markers along the mountain top, which looked a bit like coloured trig points (Photo 5) - they may have a different purpose, but in poor weather, they would serve as good waymarkers. Does anyone know if these have another function ?
