Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

11 Nov 2023 Autumn

Both previous reviews make interesting points as to the enjoyment of this route, but having walked it on a beautiful autumn day, I have to concur with both in their praise, and to also say I found the lane stretch quite beautiful for its rural nature and ease of navigation. For more "interesting" routes, you'd want to look further afield, but for moving at a steady rhythm through lovely open countryside, it suited me just fine.

All the centres on this route are very nice places, with plenty of amenities. Every house in Huby seems to be selling eggs or honey or something..!

The walk out from Easingwold follows some easy field margin paths allowing for steady progress. Some farm tracks were muddy but not hard to negotiate, especially for the time of the year. There are a couple of stiles that have seen some wear, and one gate tied with wire rather than latched, but again, all easily surmounted. The route is well drawn, navigating the private house issue that the first reviewer had clearly. On paper some looks as though it doesn't take the most direct route, but all is easily walkable and scenic, so to its credit.

There is a regular bus in both directions to make returning to the start easy.

04 Oct 2023 Autumn

I walked this from Shipton to Easingwold at the beginning of October. My experience seems quite different to the previous reviewer which I think is really good. We are walking for different purposes with different expectations. I found the roadwalking quite useful in that I could let my mind run free as there were few distractions. Slso my purpose was to get to Easingwold so it felt quite good to be going quite swiftly. I stopped at the Community Shop in Huby. Well worth patronising. From Huby some of the walking along tracks was OK but it did turn into an obstacle course, with stiles, electric fences, waist high nettles, lots of rough pasture with long wet grass, mud in plenty, and lots of cows. Cows I don't mind thankfully. It shows how different a route is depending on what the farmers are doing and what the weather has been like apart from the season.

20 Jun 2023 Spring

This walk is tough on a hot day. Whilst it's near-on flat around 1/3rd of the route is a long, pathed road. The road is seldom used so traffic was minimal, but it did get rather tiresome.

I split the journey into 2 parts:
1- Easingwold to Huby
This part is lovely. Lots of variations of track, from path to field and I saw a deer, rabbits and squirrels up close. Most of this half was easy to tread, with minimal overgrowth- but beware there are a significant number of stiles to hop over and a busy road to navigate. I actually ended up taking a detour nearer to Huby due to some cows in a field. They intimidate me.... but this was around the 6k mark so it was only 3km off course. By doing this I did find myself in a beautiful daisy field, so it wasn't all bad! The remainder of the walk to Huby cows and sheep were in the fields but the farmers had put a nice segregation fence along the path so you could walk without fear of interrupting sheep!
I reached Huby after 9km.

Part 2- Huby to Shipton
This part of the journey started out well, I left Huby and followed the main road, by footpath to the turning. From here it's a path up to a very grand looking house, which I entered and crossed in error. There is a gate to the left of the house which you navigate round, but it was hidden by a wheely bin and very overgrown. I only noticed it because once I had reached Shipton I did the walk in reverse.

Once you've followed all the signs past the house, unfortunately this is where it gets long, and boring. The gravel path initially seems OK... then it turns to actual road. It is an extremely quiet road, but it is a good 5-6km of solid walking with no scenery except tall hedges and grey road. You do need to keep an eye out for passing cars and I found the closer I got to the end the more cars approached. Once I'd passed the nursery it was then over a busy crossroad and past the Moorlands nature reserve. A right turn down another gravel path and eventually I was pleasantly faced with fields again. These fields are much more overgrown that stretch 1, but I think I only had to navigate one stile.

Upon reaching Shipton I was hoping for a cool drink at the pub, but it appeared to be closed... so I walked to the far end of the village and had my lunch at the village hall.

Overall the walk was pleasant, but certainly the Huby to Shipton section isn't so much a walk I would recommend for general walkers who are out to enjoy scenery. It really is for distance training and for those who need to get from A to B on foot.
