Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A very good and fair review of this walk. From Whippingham an alternative route to the main road could be Beatrice Avenue, passing St Mildred’s Church, and Saunders Way, passing East Cowes cemetery.

This route follows a section of the Isle of Wight coastal path. It is very well signposted and easy to find.
Much of the route is on pavements, quiet roads and bridleways so is very accessible. However, the tarmac does rather give the knees a pounding so would recommend running shoes over walking boots!
The route begins walking out of the town centre of East Cowes (shops, cafes, Waitrose, public loos and transport links) on the main road passing Osbourne House and out of town. There is a lovely but hilly section on quiet roads to the back of Wootton Bridge where you wind through the backs of a 1970s housing estate to come out at Wootton Creek. Public toilets, shops and eating establishment here too. Crossing the road a few times here to follow the pavement is a bit hairy at times! Lovely quiet Bridleway through to Fishbourne and then on towards Binstead through the grounds of Quarr Abbey. Recommend quiet contemplation and cake stop here! Back on the Bridleway passing through the back of Ryde and then down onto the seafront. Ryde is a Victorian seaside town and has shops, restaurants and a transport hub for ferries to the mainland and buses to the rest of the Island.
