Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Bostal Boy

12 Mar 2023 (edited 21 Mar 2023) Winter

Walked on 11th March, this route is well traced on the map and pretty easy to follow on the ground. I headed from East Grinstead to Crowborough. The first section follows the Forest Way to Forest Row. This is an old railway line repurposed as a popular walking and cycling path. It is fairly flat and good going under foot throughout the year with no obstacles.

From Forest Row, the path heads into Ashdown Forest along farm tracks and across field paths. There were however more metaled drives than I was expecting so the going underfoot was usually pretty good. This is the High Weald however, so the terrain is cut by numerous streams through the underlying sandstone which results in lots of steep valleys. The walk is consequently quite strenuous. There are stiles and gates to negotiate but not a lot of livestock. I passed through a field of alpacas, and that was it.

If you come off the route at Forest Row or Hartfield, you will find facilities in the villages but you pass nothing directly on the path. So take a picnic. At about the half-way point, the route crosses the famous Pooh Sticks Bridge. All in all a nice route.
