Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I completed this walk two days ago travelling south from Tipton. It's a fairly perfunctory route which improves mainly after leaving the busy Birmingham New Road behind along what felt like an old dismantled railway route.

There is some interest provided by the zoo and the castle at the Dudley end. The construction of the tramway was still underway when we did the walk, and it will be a useful public transport addition when complete.

I started at the Tipton end. The route follows the High Street and its multiple stops and shops. You also pass a small park with a statue of boxer William Perry "The Tipton Slasher". Having walked down a couple of residential streets with pedestrian crossings, where necessary, the route comes out at the A4123, a very busy road which needs to be crossed with great care. The route becomes very offroad from there. A paved footpath takes you along the back of the Black Country Museum and towards the car park of the Zoo. Eventually, you come out at Castle Hill, having passed the side of the martial arts school. When I walked it, Castle Hill was closed for construction of the Metro (tram) route. There is a special crossing for this, which closes only when machinery needs to move through. From there, it is a short walk up Castle Hill to the meeting place outside the bus station. This route is direct and easy to follow with a good offroad section. My only slight concern is crossing the Birmingham New Road, but it is crossable with care.
