Droitwich Spa to Bromsgrove 2 (Drobro 2) review.

An enjoyable walk which takes in a stretch of the Worcester & Birmingham Canal.

Note: I walked Bromsgrove to Droitwich Spa.

There’s quite an urban walk out of Bromsgrove, first alongside a B-road and then residential streets. Generally, the route to the canal makes good use of available footpaths.

The Slow Way follows the Worcester & Birmingham Canal towpath for much of the way into Droitwich Spa (Photos 1 & 2).

There’s a halfway break point where the towpath passes under Westonhall Road. The bar at the Stoke Prior Sports & Country Club doesn’t require membership. Alternatively, cross over the canal to The Boat and Railway pub (Photo 3).

Leave the towpath at a stone footbridge soon after the railway bridge (Photo 4). From there it’s a stroll through a couple of fields and past a dairy farm to reach a marina (Photo 5).

After the marina, the canal walk continues until the M5 underpass. The Slow Way follows main roads into Droitwich Spa. Alternatively, there is a short stretch of path beside the River Salwarpe.

Pretty straight forward walk. Lots of residential walking through streets and alley ways after Stoke Prior which isn't the most picturesque. Canal paths can be a little boring with lots of industrial parks walked past. We couldn't locate the path near the railway crossing and had to cross over the railway bridge and then rejoin the path jumping over a fence.

An enjoyable and easy to follow route. We started from Bromsgrove. The route takes you through the pretty town centre with its multiple stops and shops. The route continues along a main road before a series of footpaths take you through a residential area. There is short amount of walking along a quiet lane before rejoining the main road to the Worcester and Birmingham Canal. It's a lovely stretch of canal and takes you most of the rest of the way. Having left the canal, there are a couple of fields (of a dairy farm) to cross with gates and stiles are are not in the greatest of repair. Having got across you pass a marina and briefly join the wide towpath of the restored Droitwich Canal. The last section follows the pavements of main roads rather than the new towpath favoured by most locals. This might not seem such a great move at first, but it does give you the chance to see some of the fascinating old buildings of the centre of Droitwich Spa before getting to the meeting point by the civic buildings. This route is safe, well plotted, easy to follow and enjoyable. There are pubs dotted throughout and plenty of benches. Full marks.

An easy and enjoyable walk, first part of a two route walk from Bromsgrove to Worcester with David Sanderson. All easy to follow, a lot of canal walking and pleasant scenery.

The meeting point at Bromsgrove is the Housman statue on High Street. From here we follow the old A38 for about 1.5 km into Charford. The route then follows a mixture of alleyways and residential streets, and close attention to the map is required. After crossing the A38 at a pelican crossing, we follow the edge of a park and cross another field to the B4091, which we leave almost immediately on an old lane which crosses the river Salwarpe and rejoins the B4091 above a church yard. We follow the B road to the Worcester and Birmingham canal.

Turning right onto the canal towpath, we follow the canal for about 4 km until just after it crosses the railway, then cross a bridge and a few fields to the marina. There is one slightly awkward overgrown stile which might inconvenience those wearing shorts, and in places the path line is not well marked. From the marina, we follow the recently rebuilt Droitwich Canal until it disappears under the M5. From here the route into Droitwich is on pavements and there are pelican crossings at the major road crossings.

Easy to follow. Much of the route is along an attractive stretch of the Worcester and Birmingham canal.
