02 Apr 2024Walked as first half of a potential Rail Walks route from Risca to Caerphilly. Scenic walk with no problems. As noted by another reviewer it is mainly on roads, but they are very quiet and I had no traffic issues. In fact, after all the rain it's a pleasure not to be squelching through the mud. Good views from the ridge above Risca. Machen church looked interesting but was closed. Draethen is a lovely village although it's a great shame that the Hollybush pub has closed.

Lovely short walk over the lower slopes of Machen mountain. Mainly lanes, but there are a couple of sections through fields over styles. Quite steep up that last bit to the top of the ridge before the descent down into Lower Machen.

22 Sep 2022Route has now been corrected so the route follows the footpath to the footbridge over the dual carriageway, rather than trying to lead you into the industrial estate.

21 Sep 2022This is the alternative I took, when Draris (one) didn't work. It's the same route, just takes a possible route around the trading estate. The overall route is fine, quite a lot on roads, but these were quiet.

The majority of the route is on small lanes. Only a couple of cars passed me.
I think someone could design a good route option that's a little further but largely on footpaths.
