Description
This version is simpler than DowMag One as it follows the canal virtually the entire way, and avoids a walk along the busy (although with a pavement) A5147 and having to cross it. It is almost exactly the same length

10 Aug 2024The route starts from Maghull by passing some interesting plastic bottletop art, and reaches the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath over a swingbridge, with level access. There are some rather lovely suburban gardens backing onto the canal along the first section, but as the canal becomes more rural, the wide gravel towpath becomes a narrow, occasionally cobbled or muddy, track between the vegetation, making it a challenge for most wheels, although there were one or two careful cyclists.
The route passed through some classic Lancashire arable farming land, and shortly before the end there was a canalside café. A section of the towpath was being re-gravelled at the time, but was still open.
At Downholland, leaving the towpath to the north west of the main road bridge over the canal, and through the pub garden and car park, allows safe level access to the end of the route at the pub, avoiding having to cross that busy road.
