10 Aug 2024I started the route from the pub at Downholland, where the car park and pub garden offered direct access to the canal towpath, without having to cross the busy road there. For most of the way the towpath was a well-trodden path through vegetation, and could be quite narrow, and possibly quite muddy in winter. I think it would be tricky for wheels, although there were two or three careful cyclists.
The route passed through very pleasant traditional arable farmland with lots of wildlife. There were quite a few canalside pubs dotted along the route, generally offering good lunch opportunities.
At the time I walked it, there was a short towpath closure at Crabtree Bridge Farm, near Burscough, but the diversion was easy, across a level bridge, along the path the other side, next to moored boats for 200 metres, and back over another level swing bridge. I was told the towpath should be repaired and reopened within a few weeks.
Access from the towpath to the main road in Burscough was via a flight of steps, but a step-free alternative was available through a large kissing gate and along a bit of road. Burscough felt very noisy and busy with cars after a lovely long peaceful canal walk.
