Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

I walked this route from Dover to Deal. There's a lot to say! A good and varied and interesting and beautiful and challenging route!

After walking through the attractive Dover town centre, head along the parade (via a pedestrian subway, which is well lit and activated with art and accessible by ramp on both ends).

The climb out of Dover isn't too long, but it is quite steep and demanding! On the stretch from the top of the cliffs to St Margaret's Bay, there are a million possible paths; so long as you keep the ocean to your right and don't go over the cliffs, you'll make your way. I've tried to plot an accurate route here. I encountered some steps, some mud, some steep bits, and some bits close to a cliff edge. Definitely not always easy, but not really too difficult either.

I found the stretch of road walking in St Margaret's to be surprisingly unpleasant, a narrow road with little cover. Luckily it was short, and the stretch of footpath to Kingsdown is really lovely. I encountered cows in the path at one point, but it was a large field to cross, so it was no problem going around them.

As you come down into Kingsdown, you meet up with a road. Along this road, your choice is walking on the road, a narrow stretch of tarmac with no pavement, or on the "beach", which makes for very slow walking along the rocks. I opted for the rocks, as there was a bit too many cars for my liking.

The rest of the walk is along really fantastic waterfront walkways. Pass the awesome Walmer Castle, Deal Castle, and other monuments, shops, and sights on the way into the lovely Deal, including the cool pier. There's a lot to explore and discover in Deal, I was quite pleased to end my walking for the day there and explore!

Overall, a great route with spectacular views of the ocean. Surprisingly limited views of the iconic white cliffs as you go up and over them, so make sure to appreciate the views of them you get when you get them!.
