Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

26 Sep 2023 Autumn

We walked the other direction, from Rossington to Doncaster.

Inevitably this is a mostly urban walk, although it uses the Doncaster greenway where it can. Nothing wrong with it, but not much to recommend either.

The initial section leaves Rossington and joins the National Cycle Network, following it along paths under the M18. It goes next to the (ex-mining) Mother Drain which had flooded and left the path ankle deep in water. It looks as if there could be a better alternative route from Rossington crossing the golf course, but someone else will need to recce and plot that one.

Once we’d dried off our feet, we carried on along the Greenway, around the edge of the suburb of Bessacar and over the railway line (with a clear gated crossing point).

The most interesting section of the walk was Lakeside, with its attractive lake and the Doncaster rugby/football stadium. There is also a large outlet shopping centre. When you get to the first lot of water coming from Rossington (a small marina, with flats opposite), keep to the path right on its edge rather than crossing the park – which is shown as the route but is now being built over. We then followed the Lakeside Boulevard (road) to the Stadium Way – it looks from the map as if you can take the slightly longer (but more scenic) way right next to the lake round to the stadium, but needs someone else to walk it and confirm. Next to the stadium, climb the grassy hill for the panoramic view over the city.

There is nothing much else to recommend on the remainder of the route to the station. It’s a rather run down and unprepossessing part of Doncaster.

At the station there are all the usual facilities including a tiny real ale pub, The Draughtsman, on platform 3B.

I walked this Rossington to Doncaster after heavy rain. It was mainly fine except one stretch of path which was over ankle deep and I took my shoes and socks off to wade through which wouldn't be all that nice in winter! A mix of national cycle path, footpaths and urban walking with plenty to keep you interested along the route as well.

Easy to follow route along the Doncaster Greenway . New route in Bessacarr through the new housing estate and under the railway line isn’t signposted but as I knew the area I was able to find it. Good footpaths all the way suitable in all weather conditions, with very little traffic for the main part.
