Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

29 Mar 2022An easy walk along the beautiful Mon & Brec canal towpath for most of the way. Before reaching the canal path however, there are some busy roads to cross to get out of the centre of Cwmbran - most of these have controlled crossings with lights, but not all, although there are always ramps for wheelers. Apart from one short stretch of 100 metres or so, the canal is continuous from Cwmbran to its end at the outskirts of Newport. Once you leave Cwmbran, it wanders through some lovely green countryside right up to the end at the Barrack hill tunnel (blocked off).
The walk finishes through the streets of Newport and involves several rampways and walkways before reaching the railway station.
To summarise, the urban parts at the beginning and end are not that wonderful, but overall it`s worthwhile for the canal section, which takes up around 3/4 of the whole walk. It`s also flat most of the way - there are 7 or 8 locks heading downhill towards Newport and also a fairly steep ramp as it goes under the M4 motorway.
