07 Mar 2024March 2024. Direction: Caerleon to Cwmbran.
Only two stars for this route, as it has quite a long stretch along Newport Road and there are a couple of issues also. I would recommend Cwmcae2 as an alternative, which avoids the main road section.
I have walked this route both ways now and it`s not easy to find your way out of Lodge Wood either way, as there are several circular and crossing paths.
There is also a minor access issue near Park Farm. I think the route is intended to go through the open field and not the field with solar panels, in which case, there is a tied gate close to Park Farm, which has barbed wire wrapped around the top rail. The alternative is to go take the path through the solar panels field, in which case there is also a tied gate at the end of the lane from the other farm (Pen y Parc Farm), but at least no barbed wire, so easy enough to hop over.

05 Mar 2022I walked from Cwmbran to Caerleon. There's a convenient footpath from the north-bound platform at Cwmbran station (more direct than using the main entrance if this is your starting point). Most of the route was fine, though I had some minor navigation issues:
1) From Llanfrechfa Way, join the footpath at a small car park just south of Llanyrafon Manor (not via the manor itself - unreliable access).
2) Between Pen-y-Parc and Park Farm, take the track that runs next to the solar panels.
3) At Park Farm there were no footpath markers; I had no problem walking through the yard but had to climb over a gate. Once in the fields, stiles were easy to spot.
4) In Lodge Wood there are more paths than are shown on the OS map. I had to retrace my steps after following an obvious path that stayed close to the bottom edge of the wood; after closer investigation, I found the less obvious path that goes uphill, as shown on the map. At the top there were more path options (head left & downwards); I was soon on the road near Lodge Farm Church.
