Description

On the day I wanted to download and walk Cromag5 I kept getting an 'Error 500' message. I set off anyway and this route is the recording of the walk. Shorter and more direct than the other routes but with some overlap.

From the shops in Maghull West along a B road that becomes a C road that becomes a lane (Green Lane) with verges. It is a very quiet lane. Past a farm and onto a large embankment between the Maghull Brook and large open fields. Over a bridge with steps to Lunt Meadows. A sign here says the area might flood if the river Alt is high. On this day it was dry underfoot. Woodland next as you pass Lunt. There is a path offset from the A5758 and a light controlled crossing point. There are new houses being built in the North of Thornton and the path has been diverted, lamp posts are being installed so I think the change is permanent. Suburban streets on the outskirts of Crosby then down the main road. At Crosby Village I looped through the pedestrianised shopping with benches, shops, cafes, pubs etc. This is a nicer place to start/finish rather than going directly to the official node which leaves you stranded like a lonely lemon at the side of a busy road

25 Mar 2025 Spring

I walked from Maghull to Crosby on a warm spring day.
Shops in Maghull, coffee for now, and lunch for later from One Central Deli. Quickly out of Maghull town to very quiet Green Lane leading past a farm with huge toy soldier. Sign posts for the Trans Pennine Way A good footpath leads to the Maghull Brook with wide open fields. It reminded me more of the Fens than the Pennines. Lapwings! Steps over a bridge to Lunt meadows, I had lunch here on a bench overlooking the site of a prehistoric settlement. Quite windy across these flat fields. Lovely woodland next with blackthorn blossom and pussy willow catkins, some leaves beginning to show. Next alongside a busy A road hidden behind a hedge, then a new diverted path past housing construction. Suburban roads into Crosby are a little boring but look out for an old windmill. A pedestrianised shopping precinct provides.
A enjoyable walk with interest and variety.
Unsuitable for wheels .
