Description
This is a great route which follows the Shropshire Way - as you know it will be well signed, well maintained and accessible. I did not like the look of the other two variants as I wanted to be well away from the noise of the A road. This is a detour to the west and much better for it ! There is a good train service between Ludlow and Craven Arms. Although this route could be just used for the walk between Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre to Stokesay Castle (definitely worth a stop) or Ludlow to Bromfield for shorter walks. Be careful of the A road at Stokesay its the only A road crossing but it is busy.
There's one steep climb up Stoke Wood near Stokesay Castle but fairly easy walking after that. There's a lovely woodland Walk at Aldon Gutter. If walking from Craven Arms when you get into the opening in the woods there's a stream and a bridge to the left, cross that and there's a derelict old house - walk to the right of that and an opening into the woods should appear as the path veers left. There's then a walk through a pretty small valley leading up to an old disused barn.
The next section is a quiet country lane and I only saw one car - also its a good chance for looking at some great houses!
As you leave Wetmore there is a walk across tracks and one field (which may get boggy). I was amazed that a Reeves pheasant jumped out of the hedge and started following me - must have escaped from somewhere !
The bridge and weir at Bromfield are definitely worth a look.
There's then a genteel walk through Oakley Park estate which is beautiful in Autumn.
There's a small hill to climb out of Prior's Halton and a walk across fields to the woods in the distance. Then suddenly the magnificent Ludlow castle is visible on the hill and you get a great view of it from the bridge near the weir.
Ludlow is a great town for foodies and the market !

22 Oct 20235 star route - so much to see but also a very relaxing route.
So much to see on this gorgeous walk. I caught the train from Ludlow to Craven Arms (fairly regular service). Its a short walk to the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre (cafe, loos, museum). There's a good path behind the visitors centre which takes you to Stokesay Castle (a definite stop - cafe / loos again). Crossing the railway line there's a fairly steep walk up to the woods and a great view back.
A lane with a high hedge - with gaps to see Brown Clee and Titterstone Clee Hills - took me to Aldon a tiny farming hamlet. As the road weaves out of Aldon follow the road downhill for a few yards and the path to the left into the woods should be visible. This is a great woodland walk through Aldon Gutter !
The country lane through Wetmore helps you pick up the pace but is very quiet with good views towards Mortimer Forest.
Bromfield looks a bit agro-industry from a distance but that disappears and then there's a a beautiful weir and bridge to look at and a lovely walk through Oakley Park.
The walk into Ludlow is great with views of the castle, old houses, green and town square, and the town itself is worth exploring - especially for foodies !!.
